Since 2005, the Peterborough Saxons, in conjunction with Gerry Anderson, the UKs NFL Europe Football Development Officer, have made numerous in school appearances to promote the game of American Football.

Working with children aged 10 - 15, the Saxons hold an hour long introductory training session built around 4 key skills used in American Football, Throwing, Catching, Running and Tackling. The sessions are non contact, and use 'Flag Football' equiptment. Flag Football is a low cost, low risk version of the full game, and can be played at all ages as either an introduction to kitted football, or as an alternative to those, not comfortable with the physical demands of the kitted game.

With the support of schools in the local area, and the NFLE development team, the Saxons have introduced flag football to nearly 500 children in the last two years, some of whom are now playing week in week out in Saxons colours. American Football is unique in the respect that any one of any size, shape, height, weight or level of athletic ability can participate, and is effective in breaking down barriers presented by most other team sports Often those who do not feel they can contribute in more common sports such as football, cricket or rugby, find a niche for themselves in American Football, where the positional requirements are varied to accommodate all skill sets. An example would be the Saxons senior team, where the smallest player is 5'6" and 9 stone, and the largest, 6'2" and 22 stone.

We can also provide the labour and experience to hold an introduction to football either as part of an activity day, or as an after school initiative and the ongoing support to your establishment to effectively promote American Football as an alternative sporting activity. Our long term goal is to help schools to produce their own talent, and start flag football teams who will compete locally against one another with the aspiration of playing nationally for the Peterborough Saxons, the first step on the ladder towards youth and senior football and the associated international prospects.
