Junior Football

The evolution of flag football has seen BYAFA introduce an innovative product to the youth football market in the form of 5 on 5 Junior Kitted Football.

In 2006, the Saxons launched a Junior kitted side, who went on to become the third best team in England.

The junior kitted game follows the same format of Flag Football. It is played 5 against 5, on a smaller field, but introduces players to the protective equipment and physical contact of the full 11 a side game.

Tackling and blocking is permitted, just as in the adult game, so players new to the sport can ease gradually into the full format, learning the skills and techniques on a smaller scale whilst graduates from Flag make the natural transition to kitted football, without the immediate leap to the full 11 man format.

Junior kitted football is played in a tournament format, games lasting two 15 minute halves with teams playing as many as 5 games in a day. There is no kicking of the ball in junior football. Teams can score points by either running, or passing the ball into the end-zone. The resulting Touchdown is worth 6 points, and gives an opportunity for conversion from either 5 or 12 yards out worth 1 or 2 points respectively. Defensively, teams can score points by returning an interception or fumble for a touchdown, or by tackling an opposition player in their own end-zone, causing a Safety which is worth 2 points.

In their debut season, junior Saxon players travelled all over the country to compete, playing in tournaments held at Norwich, Sussex, Sheffield amongst others and American Football gives your child an opportunity to compete in a national league, with excellent opportunities for further development.
